To the editor: Whereas I can admire columnist Jonah Goldberg’s perspective of Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley’s reply to the query relating to the reason for the Civil Struggle, I’ve to disagree along with his premise that this was a gaffe, or a misstep.
As a former resident of South Carolina throughout Haley’s tenure as governor, I can guarantee Goldberg that that is merely who Haley is. Her reply fully embodies what she and the vast majority of South Carolinians imagine: that slavery was not a serious reason for the Civil Struggle.
Having gone to highschool initially of Haley’s tenure as governor, I can shed some mild on what is definitely taught to college students in South Carolina concerning the Civil Struggle.
We had been taught that the Civil Struggle was sparked by a debate on states’ rights. We had been taught that the Confederacy by no means signed a treaty to finish the Civil Struggle, and as horrifying as this sounds, we had been instilled by these instructing us with the sense that the South can rise once more.
To say that it is a “gaffe” by Haley is preposterous. What she stated might be probably the most trustworthy reply we may have anticipated from her.

To the editor: Goldberg misses the elephant within the room when discussing Haley’s so-called gaffe.
The Republican Get together is on a mission to rewrite the historical past of our authentic sin, slavery, and its brutal legacy that’s nonetheless skilled by African Individuals. Moreover, the get together doesn’t have the braveness to rein its most rabid members.
We noticed the Accomplice flag contained in the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. This flag has the identical which means for Black Individuals because the Nazi flag has for Jews, and I don’t recall a single Republican chief denouncing the desecration of our temple of democracy with the presence of this flag.
In case you are a Republican, it takes braveness to say that the present plight of African Individuals is a direct results of slavery and the discrimination that adopted it. The get together of Abraham Lincoln is now the get together of Jefferson Davis.
